Programme Learning Outcomes

PLO-1

Graduates can explain and understand fundamental principles of mathematics.

- Able to correctly recall and explain the principles of calculus.

- Possess an understanding of logical meaning and can explain reasoning processes, including the ability to construct sound proofs and reasoning, as well as mathematically analyze sequences and convergence, limits, continuity, derivatives, and integrals of functions.

- Able to recall and explain the principles of linear algebra and methods for finding exact solutions to ordinary differential equations, as well as find optimal solutions for both linear and nonlinear problems.

- Able to explain the principles of numerical methods and select appropriate techniques for finding approximate solutions to mathematical models for solving various problems, including interval estimation, error analysis, and explaining their meaning.

PLO-2

Graduates can use computers as a tool to help solve mathematical problems and their applications.

- Able to explain basic computer programming principles, including writing structured and object-oriented programs.

- Able to explain data structuring methods for efficient processing, and explain the principles of designing and analyzing basic algorithms in order to select algorithms appropriate for a given application.

- Able to explain the principles of database management systems, data design and modeling for relational databases, converting models into data tables, the SQL database query language, and setting database access permissions, along with examples of application to real-world problems.

PLO-3

Graduates possess knowledge and can explain and analyze mathematical problem-solving within their chosen professional field, including the ability to select and adapt mathematical theories or processes appropriately for that field of work.

- Able to explain mathematical principles related to applications in industry and logistics, as well as principles of economics and investment.

- Able to explain mathematical principles related to applications in finance, investment, and insurance, including understanding business systems and using advanced spreadsheet software for financial business work.

- Able to explain mathematical principles related to data analysis, and systems analysis and design, including data analysis and processing using artificial intelligence methods.

- Able to explain fundamental theories of algebraic structures, methods for solving differential equations, and mathematical analysis to build individualized in-depth expertise.

PLO-4

Graduates can conduct independent study and research in applied mathematics or applied computing, understand current knowledge for presentation, and engage in reasoned discussion and respond to questions.

Philosophy

The Bachelor of Science Program in Applied Mathematics focuses on equipping graduates with mathematical knowledge for the pursuit of new knowledge and its integration with related disciplines. It also develops skills in applying mathematical and information-based knowledge to support problem-solving in business and industrial contexts.

Importance

The rapid advancement of the country in economic and social development, science and technology, and engineering has led to the extensive application of mathematical knowledge across various fields. These include the use of mathematics in production planning, supply chain and logistics management, and other quantitative applications. Effective utilization of such applications requires both theoretical understanding and specialized skills, resulting in a growing demand for personnel with strong mathematical knowledge integrated with expertise in science, technology, and industry to solve complex problems. Furthermore, advanced research increasingly relies on mathematical knowledge. Studies have indicated that Thailand faces a shortage of scientists and mathematicians, which reflects a lack of personnel capable of contributing to the development of technologies suited to the country’s specific environmental and economic contexts amid increasing international competition. The production of qualified personnel in applied mathematics—who possess both theoretical knowledge and practical expertise in application and research—remains significantly low compared to other disciplines and the national population. Recognizing the importance and necessity of developing skilled personnel in applied mathematics, the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science, which is well-equipped with qualified staff and computing resources, has undertaken the revision of the Applied Mathematics curriculum. This initiative aims to produce graduates with expertise in applied mathematics who are capable of leading or contributing to problem-solving efforts and conducting research to support technological development independently. The department expects that graduates of this program will be able to effectively apply their knowledge across various professional fields, practice their careers with integrity and ethical responsibility, and contribute to society—thereby supporting government policies aimed at addressing workforce shortages in critical fields and promoting national development.
